Blairsville Bluegrass Festival Cancelled
It is with much regret that the Union County Historical Society is canceling the bluegrass festival scheduled for September 17, 18, and 19 in Blairsville. Although this has been a successful and enjoyable event for the past three years, there are several reasons for not going forward with it this year. Everyone is aware of the condition of the economy everywhere at the present time, and our area is especially hard hit. This has caused a drought in sponsorship money from sources upon which we usually depend. Other festivals and events in the area have taxed sponsors to the limit.
The Union County Historical Society has begun a program to recognize the pioneers of shaped note music in our county, and a top priority at the moment is to extend this recognition to pioneers of other genres of music in Union County. While the bluegrass festival has been enjoyed by many, it has come to be the belief of the music committee that recognizing and honoring our local musical pioneers is more in keeping with the goals of the historical society. An event such as the bluegrass festival requires a lot of time from the members and volunteers. Most of these people are already loaded with as many duties as they can handle, and it is an imposition to ask them to do more. The Union County Historical Society wishes to thank all of the people who make our programs possible. We are always open to suggestions and questions.
